Sanding and Refinishing

Standing in kitchen looking into living room with refinished, shiny floors

Many of the houses in Central NY have floors which date back to the construction of the house. They usually vary between red oak, white oak, beech, cherry, and maple. Some of the older houses dating back to the 1800’s also contain species such as ash, birch, and yellow pine.

While the wood species vary between houses, most have one common trait; the natural beauty of the wood can usually be brought back whether the floor has been down for 20 years or 120 years. A lot of floors may look like they have seen their day, however many times with a sanding and refinishing, the floors come back with a new life.

By sanding the wood down to its original raw, natural state, it opens up possibilities for homeowners to choose a natural finish look as well as a variety of different colors.

Solid Hardwood Installations

Solid Hardwood comes in many different sizes and variations. Strip flooring offers face widths of 2 ¼” or 3 ¼” along with plank face widths of 4” – 7”. Whether you are looking for a grain pattern that is clearer, or one that is more variable; dark floors or light floors, the options are numerous. Solid flooring can be installed as prefinished or sanded and finished on site. Please give us a call today for any other questions or inquiries.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is a versatile, resilient floor which gives homeowners more options when it comes to their flooring.

Laminate floors are a type of synthetic floor which generally do not contain any real wood. These floors are popular because of their cost and quick installation times.

Laminate floors come with the look of hardwood or stone. Laminate floors can be installed above or below grade, leaving homeowners with the option to refurbish rooms where the possibility may not have existed in the past.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)

LVT flooring with decoration

Luxury Vinyl Tile is a vinyl product which captures the natural beauty of stone in a vinyl product. Luxury Vinyl Tiles are manufactured to mimic the patterns of ceramics, slates, and other stone products.

LVT’s are durable, versatile tiles that can give the look of real stone tiles, going as far as even being able to grout some styles. LVT’s are a nice alternative to stone for people who may want the stone tile look, but a little more forgiveness than natural stone has to offer. Luxury vinyl floors are not as hard as natural stone, therefore can be more forgiving when things are dropped on them. They also tend to stay a little warmer under your feet, as their vinyl composition does not render them as colt as natural stones.

LVT’s are a nice option for homeowners who like the natural stone look, but would rather have the alternative.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

While most LVT is made to mimic natural stone, LVP is more common with a wood grain look. Many of the characteristics of LVP are the same as LVT, as far as durability and feel, however the main difference is the look.

LVP is available in many different colors to fit the specific tastes of each homeowner.

We at Rochester Hardwood Floors of Utica got our company name based off of the style of flooring known in central NY as “Rochester flooring.” Rochester Flooring is a style of hardwood flooring that was popular in central NY mostly in the 1930’s – 1950’s. It is found all over our local area, but prevalent in certain sections such as South Utica, New Hartford, and Clinton. The style is noticeable by the presence of putty – filled nail heads visible throughout the entire floor.

While many widths are available, the most popular sizes are usually 2″, 1 1/2″, and 1 1/3″.  There are also Rochester plank sizes available in 3″, 5″, and 7″. While the style is not as popular today as it once was, Rochester style floors are still installed on a regular basis. Their many grain patterns and traditionally narrow widths make Rochester floors a floor with a unique look that is appealing to many homeowners who like a nice variation of color in their floor.
